Project Recap: Madera Street Modern Spec House

Being involved from the beginning to the end of a project like this means I get to interject my option on every single thing from architectural details, landscaping and obviously every interior thing!

After completing a handful of heavy renovation projects and a multi-unit townhouse together, Jim Womble at Savannah Custom Builders engaged me again to help him build this amazing home. We consulted on every single detail of his vision from the floor plan down to the cabinet hardware. I’ve been down this road with my clients and I adore working on people’s personal homes to learn what they want/need and then executing their dreams. There is also something really exciting about a spec house where I have free rein to do what I think the market demands and put into the world what I want to see! I also take all the tricks that I learn and then apply them to my other client based jobs. I always grow just a little more each time we work together and I’m thankful for this unique design opportunity.

Jim began to develop his concept for the floor plan and I took what he started and applied my ideas of ways to give this gorgeous home some extra special details. When it comes to finishing materials, and lighting, Jim just says “Bonnie, do your thing” and sets me loose to drive the ship on details. That trust has come from 10 years of working together and he knows I really understand what we are trying to achieve.

This house is in a really cool part of town, walkable to Houndstooth Coffee, Lowest Greenville and adjacent to the future Henderson Avenue development project. I felt like the future homeowner would want something different than their peers, elevated finishes, and unique touches. We wanted it to be move-in ready and to me that goes further than things just being new. The spaces need to have a complete look, where someone could really just move in furniture and some personal effects and voila they are home!

Entry

I really dislike a big white box. It feels so impersonal, and upon move in the homeowner really has to use some elbow grease and creativity to make it feel special. Mixing different wall textures and ceiling treatments makes this home feel warm and layered.

Modern ship lap, black windows and gorgeous white oak create a special first impression.

This long hallway is treated with a diagonal floor, windows upon windows and a series of warm pendants.

Lighting on a stairway creates warmth!

Great Room:

The double story scale of this space is really special. The beams on the ceiling bring warmth to the soaring ceilings and bring the height down to an unassuming level. The lit orb fixture adds a modern touch to an otherwise traditional design.

Mixing black, bronze, white and warm wood give this massive space so much interest!

Dining Room:

This space is nestled in next to the kitchen at the end of a long corridor. I wanted it to feel really special to give a sense of arrival to your destination! There are two focal points: the wine wall and the wood accent wall. Creating two special moments balances each other and adds another layer of detail to create a lot of interest.

Modern and unique. This wood accent wall has it all.

I love how this wine storage nook turned out! The basalt tile along the back and the river rock add nice texture to the space.

The lighting and tile in the butlers pantry offer an interesting peak from the dining and kitchen.

Bathrooms:

The tile in the bathrooms really stole the show. Interesting shapes in more traditional materials, cool pattern play, and unique colors really make these bathrooms special. The contrast we created also elevated the smaller spaces to create special surprises.

The white oak on vanity front is echoed in the pair of cement pendants flanking the mirror. This space is small but it is mighty.

Classic materials in a unique application make all the difference.

This tile just MAKES this bathroom.

Master Bath:

The white oak cabinets set against the black marble countertops and black metal accents makes all my texture and contrast dreams come true. It’s warm yet still modern, clean lined but with depth. Add the floor to ceiling greige wall tile and space is next level.

Sourcing great materials is only part of the equation, I approved the cuts for the countertops to be sure every line would match along the edge.

I dare you to say what’s your favorite part in this space. It’s all incredibly perfect.

Green, black and white. Sure, I’ll do laundry!
